National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)
We work closely with the National Institute for Clinical Research in the North East and North Cumbria who provide the infrastructure that allows high quality health research to take place in our region, so that patients and the public can benefit from better health and healthcare.
Academic Health Science Network (AHSN)
The North East and North Cumbria forms one of 15 Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) across England, established by NHS England in 2013 to spread innovation at pace and scale – improving health and generating economic growth.
MedConnect North
MedConnect North aims to offer a bespoke service to SMEs, national and international medical technology companies, providing guidance and assistance throughout the medical technology research and innovation pathway.
The group supports companies to form partnerships with academia and the NHS in the North East and North Cumbria region.
In addition, MedConnect North supports NHS staff to encourage, drive and develop innovation, within their organisation. We co-fund a MedTech Project Officer to support our staff with the design of relevant trials for medical devices or investigator initiated trials (IITs).
Commercial companies
We currently run a number of Phase II, III and IV trials with a range of high profile commercial companies and sponsors. We routinely monitor our recruitment to time and target for such studies.
Teesside University
Through our new Strategic Partnership for Education, Research and Innovation, we collaborate with Teesside University to bring a host of innovative research projects to our patients.
This brings clinicians who have the ideas together with academics who can help develop their ideas into products, services or research studies.
National Horizons Centre
The National Horizons Centre (NHC) is Teesside University’s £22.3m centre of excellence for the global biosciences and healthcare sector, located in Darlington.
Through their delivery model of research, partnerships and training, they bring together industry, academia, talent and world-class facilities to create real-world impact. The Tees Valley Research Alliance (TVRA) works in partnership with the NHC.
Newcastle University
The Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit has a vision to facilitate world class clinical trials that impact understanding of human disease and lead to improved diagnostics and therapeutics for patient benefit.
Based within Newcastle University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit works in partnership with a number of our investigators in order to deliver high quality research.
Research Design Service (RDS)
The Research Design Service (RDS) is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to support research teams to develop and submit high quality applied health and social care grant applications to NIHR and other national peer-reviewed funding programmes.
Durham University
Our collaborations with Durham University have brought together a range of academic and clinical staff. The research projects developed have supported improvements in clinical services and have generated impactful benefits for our patients.
Hull York Medical School
Over the last decade we have developed a strong relationship with York University and the Hull and York Medical School (HYMS).
Prof Amar Rangan (orthopaedics) is the current Mary Kinross and Royal College of Surgeons Chair in Surgical Trials and Health Sciences, which is a joint appointment between the university’s department of Health Sciences and HYMS.
Researchers from South Tees have generated more than £20 million in research grants in collaboration with the York Trials Units based within the department of Health Sciences.
