Our Memory Boxes
Our Memory Boxes are for children who are bereaved (or will be) by the death of a parent, whilst in our care.
The child will receive a Memory Box and either a teddy bear or a friendship bracelet.
The parent will also be given a teddy bear or friendship bracelet, providing a physical connection between them both.
If time allows it can be nice for Mum or Dad to cuddle the teddy bear or wear the friendship bracelet before it is given to the child.
We know these small items cannot take away from their loss, but we know from experience they can be cherished by those who receive them.
All children react differently to the death of a parent, but one thing that remains important to us all are memories we hold so dear.
Young children often find it difficult to hold onto memories; a Memory Box can be a lovely way of storing items that remind them of special times.
Using your Memory Box
The idea is that the child or the person caring for them can add any items they think appropriate. This could include photos, jewellery, their glasses or a scarf.
They could include a leaflet from a day out or write a small story that reminds them of something they shared. Many like to include items from the funeral such as the Order of Service.
Over time your child may make more memories which they can add to the box as if they were sharing the occasion with their parent.
It can be a good idea to add a note to each item as a reminder of why it is so special.
This box does belong to the child. They may wish to spend time looking through it with family members and you could share memories with them.
Equally they may wish for the memory box to remain more private, allowing them privacy to reflect on their memories. This is fine.
We have provided a colourful sticker which can be placed on the front of the box. However, they may wish to decorate the box themselves or they could leave it plain.
Further support
Supporting bereaved children whilst also dealing with your own grief can be difficult.
If you have any queries or concerns then please speak to the staff caring for your loved one or contact the Hospital Bereavement Support Officers on 01642 383286, who may be able to provide some advice on where else to go for support.
Our Memory Boxes are provided thanks to the generosity of others through donations.
